OpenAI just scaled back Instant Checkout
OpenAI just scaled back Instant Checkout, its plan to let people buy products directly inside ChatGPT.

Built with Stripe, opened up to Shopify's millions of merchants. Yet only 30 merchants actually went live.
$852 billion valuation. 910 million weekly users. $2 billion a month in revenue. 50 million shopping queries hitting ChatGPT every single day. And when Walmart tested it, conversion was 3x worse than their own website.
Turns out people weren't confident enough to buy inside a chatbot.
OpenAI hadn't built a sales tax collection system. Product accuracy was sitting at 64%. And Amazon blocked every single OpenAI crawler from accessing its site.
The new plan is to hand checkout back to the retailers. Purchases now happen through apps from Walmart, Target, Instacart and others that plug into ChatGPT.
OpenAI handles the discovery, the retailer handles the transaction.
For me the lesson is the same one we keep seeing.
AI is changing how people research and decide. Discovery is shifting fast. But the moment of purchase still needs trust, familiarity and a checkout flow people already know.
The brands getting this right aren't trying to move the entire buying journey into AI. They're working out where AI genuinely helps: research, comparison, shortlisting, supported decision making.
