It's a small step initially. People can now purchase items from Etsy, in the US, without leaving the ChatGPT app.

But it points towards a potentially big shift in how people will buy "online" in the future. Both for products and services.

For brands, this means how you think and optimise for the buying journey is going to change as well.

  • People will increasingly use a blend of channels - search, social, web, retail etc. And as part of this, AI will increasingly be the front door to discovery and decision-making.... and place of transaction.

  • The “customer” making the choice might not be a person at all, but their AI assistant quietly weighing up price, quality, delivery, and trust signals on their behalf. At the very least, it will be choosing what to show people.

  • Even after purchase, service and returns could be handled by your agent, or through an LLM, with no direct contact between people or your brand.

For your brand, the starting point is to ensure you are being found and surfaced by LLMs / AI.

After this, you will need to ensure quote / transactions online are possible, and support LLMs / Agentic browsers to access and transact through (integrating with APIs / MCP that enable this functionality).

The brands that adapt early, will no doubt be huge winners.

If your brand is thinking about / working out how to navigate these shifts, 7DOTS can help. We are supporting national and international businesses to prepare for, and lead in, the age of agentic commerce.
