What are we building towards, as a country?

People and behaviour2 min readSam Page

I've found myself thinking about this question more and more often. Especially after all the conversations I've been having with people, both professionally and personally, over the past few months.

Everyone seems to agree, it's tough at the moment in the UK.
A flat economy, rising costs, distrust in politics.

We need something to give us all some positivity and confidence.

A sense of direction.

A story that we can be a part of, and be proud of.

So on this sunny Sunday afternoon, I decided to write a short article exploring how I think we could solve this.

The idea of a National Vision 2040 for the UK.

Here's a quick summary (link to full article below):

  • Things feel difficult right now - not just economically.
  • We’re missing a unifying story. A shared sense of purpose and direction.
  • Other countries are using long-term visions to inspire people.
  • The UK could do the same - if we chose to.
  • It would need to be honest, ambitious, and built through collaboration.
  • It should span climate, economics, identity, education, wellbeing, and more.
  • It wouldn't be easy. But the alternative is that we continue to tread water.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

How are you feeling? What's making your blood boil?
What do you think a National Vision could help to solve?
